Whitehouse.gov is the official website of the White House and is owned by the United States government. Launched in October 1994,[2] it contains general American history information, as well as current news pertaining to the President, press briefings, proclamations, executive orders, and any speeches the president has made on the radio.

The website is the responsibility of the incumbent administration. As a result the site is completely redesigned for each new president, and the site's structure and URLs are often inconsistent from one administration to the next.

The current administration's website is broken into the following sections:

Platform

The current website runs on the open source software named Drupal.[11] For the lay user, the White House website looks much the same as it has since inauguration day (though search should work noticeably better). But by being open source, the White House is opening itself up to all the bright ideas, powerful plug-ins, and innovative tools that the considerable community of Drupal aficionados come up with. It's a community that the White House says it is eager to tap into.[12][13][14]

Civic Engagement

On September 1, 2011, David Plouffe announced in an email that the White House is releasing "We the People" to allow public petitions on whitehouse.gov. The launch of the petitioning platform was announced by Katelyn Sabochik September 22, 2011 in a White House blog post.[15]
